The organisers of the Varsity Match have invited Alastair Hignell to be their guest of honour at the 130th meeting of Oxfordand Cambridgeat Twickenham Stadium on Thursday, 8 December.
Alastair was a double blue at Cambridge and played in four rugby Varsity Matches in the seventies. In recognition of his achievements as an Oxbridge student, the two clubs have agreed that the official Man of the Match award winner from this season onwards will receive the ‘Alastair Hignell Medal’.
He captained both the Light Blues’ rugby and cricket teams, winning three of his four games at Twickenham and losing one and drawing three of his matches at Lord’s. He notched a record 19 points in the 1975 win and aggregated a record 46 points in his four games.
He was first capped for England at rugby while still a student at Cambridge and went on to appear 14 times for his country at full back between 1975-79. He also earned his Gloucestershire county cricket cap while still a student.

This is a fantastic honour and I can’t wait to come back to Twickenham for the game – and seeCambridgewin!,” said Alastair. “I can still recall the moment I first went to Cambridge, the thrill of being named in the side to play in the Varsity Match and the equal measure of excitement and terror of playing against Oxford for the first time in 1974. In many ways I got a bigger buzz out of that experience than playing for England for the first time.”
After his illustrious playing careers came to an end, Alastair remained in sport and became a highly respected commentator for BBC 5 Live. He decided to give up that role in May, 2008, after battling with Multiple Sclerosis.
Made CBE for his services to sport, he became the Patron of the Multiple Sclerosis Resource Centre (MSRC) and the inspiration behind ‘Higgy’s Heroes’, a fund raising charity that raises money and awareness for MS sufferers.
He recently published his autobiography, “Higgy… Matches, Microphones and MS” and is breaking off from a nationwide publicity tour to.attend next week’s Varsity Match.
